Engineering in Nepal by Kevin Shrestha

General information about engineering:

Engineering is the field of education for science student with physics and math as their core subject in +2 (plus two).  It is a creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation or safety to life and property.
Engineering is a dynamic field with lots of specializations. Engineering is the application of mathematics, empirical evidence and scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to invent, innovate, design, build, maintain, research, and improve structures, machines, tools, systems, components, materials, processes, solutions and organizations. The discipline of engineering is extremely broad and encompasses a range of more specialized fields of engineering, each with a more specific emphasis on particular areas of applied science, technology and types of application.

Engineering holds a bright and exciting future in Nepal as well as abroad. In surface, it may seem that there is lack of opportunities here in Nepal. But due to the increasing growth in development projects and industrialization, Nepal offers a brought career prospects for engineers. One can make his/her career in governmental projects, private or public sector industries, and construction companies and on many other fields.
There are many colleges in Nepal with affiliation to Tribhuwan university (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), Pokhara University (PoU), Purbanchal university (PU), CTEVT (for diploma courses). Almost all the Engineering colleges of Nepal are concentrated in Kathmandu. Other than the valley, few engineering colleges of Nepal are located in other cities such as Pokhara, Butwal, Dharan, Biratnagar, and Nepalgunj.
Currently, Engineering is only taught in English in all the Engineering colleges of Nepal. So, students wishing to studying Engineering in Nepal must be prepared for this and have a good understanding of English language.
In order to become an engineer, it is required to complete the bachelor of engineering (B.E.). In Nepal, it is offered by Tribhuwan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), Pokhara University, Purbanchal University (PU). Indian Embassy, Japanese Embassy, Pakistan Embassy provides some scholarship to do in the foreign country. Tribhuwan University is considered as one of the best university in Nepal with Pulchowk Campus is consider as one of the top-ranked colleges in the South Asia. Other government engineering colleges under T.U. are Thapathali Campus (TC), Eastern Region Campus (ERC) and Western Region Campus (WRC).
The candidate with +2 Science/A level (Physic, Chemistry, Mathematics) are eligible to study engineering. It is required to give entrance exam to get admission on college. There is various institute to prepare entrance exam but it can also be done without joining them or with the help of online entrance preparation site. In Nepal, It is necessary to get top marks in entrance exam to get admission own choice top college. Along with education quality, the college you chose has a high impact on the circle of your friend and market perception to that college. The market perception of the college has a significant impact on searching job in private sector.

Civil Engineering in Nepal
Civil engineering is the most popular and oldest discipline of engineering within and outside Nepal. There are wide variety of scopes that civil engineers deal with. The most common infrastructures of civilizations like building a home or bridge, designing a road line involves civil engineering.
Civil engineering is the professional engineering discipline that deals with the planning, design, construction and maintenance of the artificial and naturally built environment. Civil engineers construct and maintain bridges, canal, dam, roads and buildings working according to their specific plans and designs. Since they carry the responsibility and reliability of the society and even the entire nation, their execution of work should be flawless. Civil engineers turn complex ideas into reality.
Civil Engineers have the responsibility to produce safe, economical and environmentally sound infrastructure for the community. They bring the most innovative structures come to life.

Civil engineering is an exciting and rewarding profession in Nepal as it is in rest of the world. The career prospects of civil engineering is unlimited. Civil engineering takes place in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies. They can work in small construction projects to designing space stations.
Most of the engineering colleges in Kathmandu as well as other cities in Nepal have maximum number of seats for Civil Engineering. The average salary of civil engineer in Nepal is NRs. 25000-40000 per month (with an experience of 0-2 years).

Electrical Engineering in Nepal
Electrical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the technology of electricity. Electrical engineers work on a wide range of components, devices and systems, from tiny microchips to huge power station generators. The advent of the modern age is marked by the introduction of electricity to homes, businesses and industry, all of which were made possible by electrical engineers.
Some of the most prominent pioneers in electrical engineering include Thomas Edison (electric light bulb), George Westinghouse (alternating current), Nikola Tesla (induction motor), Guglielmo Marconi (radio) and Philo T. Farnsworth (television). These innovators turned ideas and concepts about electricity into practical devices and systems that ushered in the modern age.
An electrical engineer is the person who is behind the design, development and innovation of new electrical equipment by using his/her engineering skills in the research, design, testing and development. An electrical engineer is a specialized type of engineer who deals with electronics, electromagnetism and electric energy.
Electrical engineers work in various projects ranging from small-scale pocket devices to huge projects like satellite and robotics. Some of the most popular sub-disciplines of Electrical engineering are:
·         Electronic engineering
·         Telecommunication engineering
·         Power engineering (deals with electricity)

Electronics and Communication Engineering – chip
Electronics engineering, or electronic engineering, is an engineering discipline which utilizes non-linear and active electrical components (such as semiconductor devices, especially transistors, diodes and integrated circuits) to design electronic circuits, devices, Microprocessors/Microcontrollers and systems including VHDL Modelling for Programmable logic devices and FPGAs. The discipline typically also designs passive electrical components, usually based on printed circuit boards.
The term "electronic engineering" denotes a broad engineering field that covers subfields such as analog electronics, digital electronics, consumer electronics, embedded systems and power electronics. Electronics engineering deals with implementation of applications, principles and algorithms developed within many related fields, for example solid-state physics, radio engineering, telecommunications, control systems, signal processing, systems engineering, computer engineering, instrumentation engineering, electric power control, robotics, and many others.

Architect (B. Arch) in Nepal
Architecture engineering primarily deals with task of building. It involves creating the maps or structural diagrams of buildings and artificial physical structures and integrating the various techniques and systems available in today’s advanced technology.
Architecture is the blend of art and science in designing physical structures that shape the environment in which we live using creativity and practical understanding of structures and materials to develop concept, plans, specifications and detailed drawing of buildings. Architects may also be involved in project feasibility studies, heritage study, urban planning, interior design and landscape design.
An architect takes into account the safety, economic viability, environmental and future aspects of any building project and makes the project sustainable and efficient.
As Architecture engineering is a sub-discipline of engineering, candidates must be sound in mathematics, physics, and computers. Also, they must possess a talent in creative design and arts as architecture is a blend of engineering and arts.
In Nepal, the scope of architecture engineering is rising in recent years. The authority to certify the design of building and other structure lies with architect in Nepal.
The average salary of Architect in Nepal is NRs. 25000-35000 per month (with an experience of 0-2 years)
