Dental Science Study in Nepal


The mouth is the window into human health. This course provides an overview of dental medicine to engage, educate, excite and assist you in improving the oral health of your patients and members of your community. This course offer scientific background, some skills for patient evaluation and interview etc. Those who do these procedures are called the DENTISTs. The dentist is a noble health profession and is in high demand for a country such as ours as there are only few dentists in Nepal. It’s not limited to Nepal only but also has a huge scope in Foreign Countries too.

ABOUT FACULTY:
In Nepal we can found 3 programs to study dental science.
1.      CDS (Certificate level after SEE) – 3 year course
2.      BDS (Bachelor level after +2) – 4.5 year + 1 year compulsory internship
3.      MDS (Master level after BDS) – Generally 3 years

WHO CAN STUDY?
            Anybody can study dentistry if you score at least 50% in SEE and take BIOLOGY as a major in +2 sciences. In +2 also you’ll need at least 50% in both years.

HOW?
            There are lots of institute (NAME, VIBRANT etc) which will provide you the required knowledge and information to sit for the entrance exam. There is provision for the central ENTRANCE EXAM now a day for all the Universities providing Dental Education in Nepal. The entrance exam will be of the same pattern as for the MBBS.

WHERE?

Ø  For the respective University you have to give the CENTRAL ENTRANCE EXAM and score at least 50% marks to pass and able to apply for the admission to the affiliated colleges.
Ø  After passing the entrance exam you have to approach the colleges you want to enroll and fill the college form separately.
Ø  MOE (Minister of Education) will also take the entrance exam yearly and they will provide the Scholarship on Merit Basis.
Ø  Some of the Embassy also provides scholarship to deserving student to study abroad.
BPKIHS ( B.P Koirala School of Health Science ) situated at Dharan also have the BDS program and isn’t affiliated to any of the university, they are autonomous and as per the information I get they also enroll the students by the central entrance exam.
CAREER AFTER BACHELOR DEGREE:
Ø  You can start your own clinic if you are interested.
Ø  Work as a Medical Officer in the hospitals or clinics.
Ø  You can proceed abroad for further studies.
COST AND DONATIONS TO COLLEGE:
Ø  As mentioned above if you can get your name in MERIT LIST in the entrance exam the government will provide you SCHOLARSHIP.
Ø  Some of the Embassy also provide Deserving student SCHOLARSHIP.
Ø  If you have to study on donation it will cost around 18-22 lakhs now, but it may vary from college to college.
FURTHER COURSES:
Ø  Master in all the Branches of  Dentistry ( Community Dentistry, Oral Pathology, Orthodontics, Peridontics, Pedodontics, Oral medicine and Radiology, Prosthodontics, Conservative and Endodontics, Oral Surgery)
Ø  Master in all Basic subjects except Pathology ( Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology, Microbiology )
Ø  Further you can do fellowship in your interested topic to gain more specialties.
